Flouride Treatment

Fluoride is widely recognized as the most effective tool for preventing tooth decay. This naturally occurring mineral is found in almost all food and water sources in some amount. For over 50 years, its benefits have been well established and strongly endorsed by numerous health and professional organizations.

How Fluoride Protects Your Teeth

Fluoride protects teeth in two main ways:

Topical fluoride helps keep your teeth strong after they have erupted. It seeps into the outer layer of tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay. You get topical fluoride by using dental products like fluoride toothpaste, mouth rinses, and gels. Dental professionals often recommend that children receive professional fluoride treatments twice a year during regular check-ups.

Systemic fluoride benefits both teeth that have already come in and those still developing under the gums. You get systemic fluoride from most foods and from community water supplies. Supplements, such as drops or gels, are also available by prescription from your dentist or doctor. Drops are usually given to infants, while tablets are intended for older children and teens. It’s important to monitor how much fluoride children consume, as excessive intake during tooth development can cause a harmless condition called dental fluorosis (white spots on the teeth).

Even though most people get some fluoride from food and water, this may not always be enough for optimal protection. Our dentist or hygienist might recommend at-home or professional fluoride treatments if you have:

  • Deep grooves or pits on chewing surfaces
  • Exposed and sensitive tooth roots
  • Fair or poor oral hygiene
  • A diet high in sugars and carbohydrates
  • Limited exposure to fluoride
  • Reduced saliva flow due to medical conditions, treatments, or certain medications
  • A recent history of tooth decay

Remember, fluoride is just one important part of cavity prevention. For best results, brush at least twice daily, floss regularly, eat a balanced diet, limit sugary snacks, and see our dentist regularly.
